A small spaniel breed, the Kooikerhondje originated in the Netherlands as a working dog, particularly to lure ducks. The breed is predominantly orange-red in colour, either solid or patched on white. Happy and lively, the Kooikerhondje is more than willing to please their owner. Adapting to situations quickly, the breed is quiet in the house and when needed, but lively and energetic otherwise. The breed does not immediately like strangers, but once they warm up to somebody, they're friends for life. With a lifespan of 12-14 years, the Kooikerhondje is prone to cataracts, von Willebrands disease, patellar luxation, and heriditary necrotising myelopathy.
