A small shepherd breed, the Schipperke originated in Belgium. The breed has a fluffy double coat, that is black or blonde in colour. Naturally curious with high energy, the Schipperke requires ample exercise and supervision. Known to be stubborn and mischievous, they will chase small animals. Smart and independent, the breed tends to do what pleases them, instead of what their owner necessarily would like. Overall good with other dogs, the breed tends to excel at obedience and agility. With an average lifespan of 13 years, the Schipperke is prone to luxating patellas, Legg-Perthes Syndrome, epilepsy, and MPS IIIB.
